Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the global 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A US startup can launch a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
