Trump's System of Consequences and Incentives

Donald Trump's insatiable desire for retribution has swiftly evolved into a methodical framework. Over the past year, the president's rage and whims have assumed the form of official policies in ways reminiscent to past dictatorial governments. Government personnel who do not cooperate are summarily dismissed and substituted by loyalists. Critical officials who confront him risk prosecution, judicial process and penalties. Opponents have been labeled under executive orders as “hostile to national interests”, “against faith communities” and “opposing economic freedom”, and threatened with criminal charges as “extremists”.

Federal Agencies Restructured

Each situation involving targeting of Trump's enemies and immunity for his allies exhibits its own particular characteristics. But, notwithstanding their specific nature, they exemplify manifestations of what has emerged as a systematic approach. Such incidents are far from random. Trump's removal of federal lawyers and law enforcement agents, accompanied by his appointment of supporters in high-level posts, began rapidly, promptly took on a regularity, and has now been formed into a regime. Federal prosecutors and the Federal Bureau have been remade into partisan organizations under his explicit command to carry out his demands. Unfairness has been turned into routine. It represents the system of punishment.

Leadership is more concerned with punishing the President's alleged adversaries than they are with defending our national security.

Inside the Structure

The beginnings of this framework has been exposed in the lawsuit of three previous senior FBI executives lodged in the ninth month in the US district court in DC against agency head a senior appointee and justice department head a key figure for wrongful dismissal in “a effort of retribution against the officials for what the accused judged to be a refusal to demonstrate adequate political loyalty”. The document states that a former acting director, the previous interim leader, recounts a conversation in which Patel “openly confessed the unlawfulness of his conduct”.

Driscoll had tried to defend agency personnel from being dismissed, the complaint alleges. Patel informed him that “White House figures” – interpreted by him to be the executive branch and federal prosecutors – had instructed him to fire anyone who they determined as having worked on a law enforcement case against him. The document goes on: “He explained that he had to fire the individuals his bosses told him to dismiss, because his capacity to keep his own position was contingent on the removal of the personnel who worked on matters involving the leader. Patel explained that there was no way he or the official could do to halt these or any other terminations, because ‘the agency sought to incarcerate the leader in detention and he hasn't forgotten it.’” Once he advised him he was violating the bureau's own internal rules, Patel supposedly said “he recognized that and he knew the nature of the summary firings were almost certainly improper”.

Extensive Consequences

Following Patel's claimed acknowledgment to the official, the Department of Justice and the FBI have been dismantled and redirected for the administration's retribution system. Several of the bureau's high-ranking agents were terminated or forced out in the early weeks of the government. Roughly numerous legal professionals at the justice department have agreed to a “voluntary departure plan”. No fewer than seven DoJ lawyers, such as those in the southern district of New York, resigned in protest over what they viewed as political interference in abandoning the criminal prosecution against the city leader, a political figure, in as a trade for his cooperation with the administration's Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests of immigrants. The public integrity section of DoJ, which oversees misconduct investigations, has been reduced to a handful of lawyers. The equality section has been devastated: seventy percent of its employees has resigned. A third of executives at DoJ have resigned. The section enforcing ecological regulations has experienced the exit of half its management.

Favors and Penalties

Regarding the mayor's situation, the temporary lawyer for the NY office, Danielle Sassoon, quit in protest against what she characterized as the “trade-off”. The border official, the president's “border czar,” was present as the agent with the mayor on television to state: “If he doesn't come through, I will return in New York City.”. Additionally, another figure, formerly the senior DoJ official and a former Trump attorney, who arranged the arrangement, was given an appellate federal judgeship, a potential stepping stone to the judicial branch.

The president's protection for wrongdoings committed while in office, awarded by the extraordinary judgment of the conservative on the highest court, thus blocking his legal action over the January 6 insurrection and preserving his public standing for the presidential race, is the cornerstone on which he stands to protect his stalwarts. Under these circumstances, he has been liberated to permit misconduct. The consequence of the supreme court decision saturates his government and the Republican Party completely. The legal case has spread. In the words of a past leader's legal adviser he commented about the Watergate
