The former Brazilian president arrested after being deemed a risk of fleeing

Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of his "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, prompting him to enact a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be allowed to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he required frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the federal district, the capital city.

The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
