The English and Welsh Drawn Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was conducted by rugby legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with Wales have been drawn in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, promising a major pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing echoes their infamous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the English team's surprise early exit.

Other Notable Group Pairings

Ireland and the Scots also share a group once again, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as underdogs in France, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and top-ranked the Springboks until the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans win their own group.

Knockout Implications

If the groups play out in line with the current global standings, other top favourites like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from both the English and the Irish all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on that side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at launch the event.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have drawn Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in France.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 stage for the first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
