The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
