Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
