A Moving Moment as Liam Rosenior Transcends Obstacles

"Rosenior represents a top tactician who understands football inside out, which is the most important thing.

"However, in my role as Chelsea's pioneering African heritage footballer, I would be lying to claim this appointment does not affect me."

Those are the words of the former Chelsea winger, who earned his historic debut for Chelsea's senior side as a substitute in the spring of 1982.

This week, the club hired RC Strasbourg boss Rosenior, 41, as their new head coach following the exit of manager Enzo Maresca.

The French club is part of a multi-club BlueCo which also controls the London club.

Statistics show a mere 12 black managers – excluding individuals in temporary caretaker roles – in the Premier League since it began thirty-four in the past.

"What really strikes me about Liam is that he grew up and developed his game not far from here, he understands this community," continued Canoville.

"Whenever children observe someone like Liam in charge of the team they support, someone who looks like them, who's from their ends, who comes from a family that champions what's right… that's profound demonstrating the path is there.

"So yes, this represents an enormous moment for the club, for London, for every aspiring individual dreaming big.

"However, currently? Let's back Liam, provide him with what he needs, and let the man do his work."

What Exactly Do the Data Indicate?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became Chelsea head coach back in the nineties and became the Premier League's inaugural black manager.

Twelve years later, by 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the pioneering black English boss in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo is the only other current Premier League gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The scarcity of managers of colour across the English game is matched by a lack of representation in the boardroom.

As per the Black Footballers Partnership 2023's report, 43% of Premier League footballers are from African or Caribbean heritage.

Yet, analysis by Kick It Out found only 3.2% of executive and leadership management teams across most Premier League clubs are from ethnically diverse communities.

Regarding first-team coaching level, according to data from eleven clubs, the figure is two percent.

For all coaching positions – encompassing head coaches – from those same 11 clubs, the figure is just five percent.

"He has undoubtedly made history in terms of him being announced as Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we want to see more of that," said Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists loads of ability that exists within black and underrepresented groups... aspiring coaches desire the opportunity to demonstrate what they can do. We need to persist in striving to dismantle those obstacles once and for all."

Additionally, the new appointee is set to become the fourth permanent English head coaches currently managing in the top flight – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – which lags behind Europe's other major divisions regarding national representation.

Sixteen of the 20 top-flight managers in Serie A are from Italy, Eleven of the 20 are Spanish, Twelve in the Bundesliga in Germany and 10 in Ligue 1 in France.

Current Chelsea caretaker manager Calum McFarlane said: "I'm sure every aspiring British managers with a youth development pedigree are, in some way regardless of allegiance, supporting Liam.

"It's really inspirational for up-and-coming British coaches in the system to witness someone land such a role with that profile and everyone hopes he will be really well."

'Let's not forget – he's there on merit'

His father, Leroy, Rosenior Sr., had a career with the likes of West London clubs, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers, and his managerial career culminating in a five-month stint at then-League One side Brentford FC back in 2006.

Two years ago, he received a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for his services to tackling inequality within the sport and wider society.

After Liam retired from playing he pursued his father's footsteps. He began penning a column for The Guardian, where in 2017 he addressed the lack of diversity among managers. He pointed out that race does not influence ability and said opportunities should be given on merit.

He further expressed a point he would repeat: how significant lack of diversity leads to a failure to understand of players with diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

During an interview with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted the way his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "difficult" and "emotional", noting that he could relate to the Dutch international with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to join him with a move from France to West London in July.

In subsequent newspaper articles, he also confessed he was "ashamed" to hear a staff member make a discriminatory remark. He vowed support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces initiative and authored a public message to Donald Trump while he was in office, accusing him of "blatant" racism.

He has subsequently built his reputation as a manager – initially with Hull City, later at Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney recently stating Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" after their time together with Derby.

Rosenior said goodbye at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term deal at Chelsea.

Chelsea had the top flight's pioneering African heritage manager with Gullit as well as the first black captain named Paul Elliott.
