A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in national infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
